Flat Roof Options Explained: GRP vs EPDM vs Felt

Which flat roofing system is best for your extension, garage or dormer? A plain-English comparison from a Kent roofer.

If you're replacing a flat roof in Thanet or East Kent, you'll be choosing between three main systems: GRP fibreglass, EPDM rubber and felt. Here's how they compare โ€” honestly.

GRP Fibreglass

A seamless, glass-reinforced polyester layer laid on marine ply. Extremely durable, looks smart, and comes with 20โ€“25 year guarantees. Best choice for extensions and dormers where finish matters. Slightly more expensive but the longest-lasting option.

EPDM Rubber

A single-piece rubber membrane, glued down. Excellent for larger flat roofs โ€” no seams means no leak points. Lasts 30+ years and handles UV and temperature swings well. Great value for garages and outbuildings.

Felt (Torch-on)

The traditional 3-layer torch-on felt system. Still reliable when installed properly, typically lasting 15โ€“20 years. Cheapest upfront but has more seams than GRP or EPDM.

Which should you choose?

For a house extension where the roof might one day be visible or walked on: GRP.

For a large garage or workshop: EPDM.

For a tight budget on a garden shed or small outbuilding: felt.

We fit all three across Thanet and East Kent โ€” happy to give honest advice on which suits your project.
